Though more than 90% of the population of United Kingdom (UK) is white, the percentage of ethnic minorities has been increasing the last five decades. The large number of these immigrants are from the former British colonies, which retain ties with the UK. The ethnic minorities are usually from the same region and have the same shared culture and history.

Most of the ethnic minorities are from South Asia -  India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Compared to the rest of the population, the average age of the Asian population in UK is lower. This may due to the large number of children in most Pakistani and Bangladeshi households. Though Indians are the largest sub category among the South Asian ethnic minorities , they are usually better off economically due to the emphasis on education and getting professional qualifications.

The number of economically active adults in the Pakistani and Bangladeshi households is also lower compared to the rest of the population. While this may be partly due to lower educational levels and skills, racial discrimination also may be a factor. The number of Asian women who are working is very low due to cultural and religious reasons.
